Degree programs at Montanuniversität begin in the winter and summer semesters. However, it is best to begin in the winter semester. All students with a high school diploma can study at Montanuniversität as there is no selection process and the number of university places is unlimited. You can only become an enrolled and matriculated student during the matriculation period.

Application Process for Austrians

1. Pre-requisites

  • Hold a high school diploma
    • Anyone without a high school diploma may sit the equivalency test to determine if they are ready for bachelor studies at university
    • You can take equivalency tests for engineering and mining studies at Graz University of Technology
  • A minimum B2 English level is recommended

2. Required documents

Bring all original documents to Montanuniversität registrar’s office: Admission Office, Franz-Josef-Strasse 18, 8700 Leoben, Austria

  • Passport or birth certificate/proof of citizenship combined with an ID-card
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
    • If transferring from another Austrian university, you will also need to bring your leaving certificate and the student statistics form

3. Registration at Montanuniversität

  • Submit your pre-registration online
  • Show evidence of the required documents at the Registrar's Office
  • Pay students' union membership fee [ÖH-Beitrag]
  • Sign into your MU-Online account.
    • Note: For the first access to your MU-Online account, you will need the pin code given to you at registration office
  • Sign-up for classes

1. Pre-requisites

  • Hold a High-school diploma
  • Foreign documents need to be translated into German or English by a certified translator and legally certified
  • A minimum B2 English level is recommended

2. Required documents

Bring or send all original documents to Montanuniversität registrar’s office:Admission Office, Franz-Josef-Strasse 18, 8700 Leoben, Austria

  • Copy of passport or birth certificate/proof of citizenship combined with an ID-card
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
    • If transferring from another university, you will also need to bring your leaving certificate and your student statistics form
    • If your high-school diploma is not equivalent to the Austrian ‘Matura’, please also bring the confirmation of admission from an acknowledged technical university located in the same country as the high-school from which you graduated.

Important notes:

  • Submit an application for admission preferably electronically
  • Foreign documents need to be translated into German or English by a certified translator, and legally certified (See important notes below)
  • A minimum B2 English level is recommended
  • German proficiency. For detailed information, click here

2. Required documents

  • Copy of passport or birth certificate/proof of citizenship combined with an ID-card
  • High-school diploma or equivalent certificate including all elected subjects and obtained grades
    • If transferring from another Austrian university, you will also need to bring you leaving certificate, your student statistics form and the transcripts
    • If your high-school diploma is not equivalent to the Austrian ‘Matura’, please also bring the confirmation of admission to an acknowledged technical university located in the same country as the high-school from which you graduated
  • Application for admission

Important notes:
All documents must be submitted in original, first authenticated by the responsible institution in the country where they were issued (Ministry for Foreign Affairs) and finally authenticated by the Austrian representative authority in the country of issue (Austrian Embassy).
Documents written in foreign languages have to be translated into German or English. These translations also have to be authenticated by the institution in the country of issue and the Austrian representative authority.

FAQ

When are the deadlines to submit an application and when does the semester begin?

Study programs at Montanuniversität begin in winter and summer semester. However, it is best to begin in the winter semester. For dates and deadlines, please consult the official Montanuniversität Leoben Calendar

Foreign students should be aware that the admission and visa processes can take several months. For this reason, it is highly recommended to send your application six months in advance.

I do not speak German. Can I be admitted to the Bachelor's program?

No. To be admitted to the Bachelor program, the knowledge of German language at Level B2 is required. 

There are preparatory courses for prospective students who currently have an A2 German level and wish to reach the required B2 level as soon as possible. For more information please visit: Language Courses.

Is there a selection process or quota system for the applicants?

There is no selection process for the Bachelor's program, and there is no limited number of students who will be admitted.

What are the requirements for admission to the BSc GE?

Please select your citizenship at Apply > Enrollment Process > BSc GE and follow the instructions.

Should I submit my application documents per email or online?

Montanuniversität Leoben does not accept scanned documents. Interested students must send their original documents (authenticated as well) per post or submit them personally to the Admission Office.

When do I have to pay the tuition fee and which are the methods of payment?

Tuition fees can be paid via a transfer or a deposit right after the registration at Montanuniversität Leoben. The deadline is 5th of September for Winter Semester and 5th of February for Summer Semester.  You can register for lectures once this is done. Note: transfer from a foreign bank can take several days.

Is it necessary to pass IELTS or TOEFL exam?

No. However, since the BSc in Geoenergy Engineering is held partially in English, a minimum B2 Level is recommended.

Are the courses listed in the curriculum available each year or each semester?

Courses are offered each year. Winter semester courses are different from summer semester courses.
