Application Process for Austrians

1. Pre-requisites

  • Hold a high school diploma
    • Anyone without a high school diploma may sit the equivalency test to determine if they are ready for bachelor studies at university
    • You can take equivalency tests for engineering and mining studies at Graz University of Technology
  • Hold a bachelor certificate in the field of engineering
  • Have 80 working days of internships
  • A minimum B2 English level is recommended

2. Required documents

Bring all original documents to Montanuniversität registrar’s office: Admission Office, Franz-Josef-Strasse 18, 8700 Leoben, Austria

  • Passport or birth certificate/proof of citizenship combined with an ID-card
  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate
    • If transferring from another Austrian university, you will also need to bring your leaving certificate and the student statistics form
  • Bachelor Certificate
  • Transcripts
  • Proof of experience and/or internships
  • Proof of English proficiency (not compulsory)

3. Registration at Montanuniversität

Once you have been admitted:

  • Submit your pre-registration online
  • Show evidence of the required documents at the Registrar's Office
  • Pay students' union membership fee [ÖH-Beitrag]
  • Sign into your MU-Online account.
    • Note: For the first access to your MU-Online account, you will need the pin code given to you at registration office
  • Sign-up for classes

  • Hold a bachelor certificate in the field of engineering
  • Have 80 working days of internships or/and working experience
  • Advanced English proficiency level: IELTS (minimum score 6.0) or TOEFL ibt (minimum score 80) or TOEFL pbt (minimum score 550)
  • Foreign Documents need to be translated into German or English by a certified translator, and legally certified
  • Your home university has to be classified as H+ university according to Anabin database

1. Pre-requisites

  • Status equivalency of international students (High school diploma)
  • Authentication of documents (by the Austrian Embassy)
  • Submit an application for admission
  • Submit an application for recognition of equivalence
  • Hold a bachelor certificate in the field of engineering
  • Have 80 working days of internships or/and working experience
  • Foreign documents need to be translated into German or English by a certified translator, and legally certified
  • Advanced English proficiency level: IELTS (minimum score 6.0) or TOEFL ibt (minimum score 80) or TOEFL pbt (minimum score 550)
  • Your home university has to be classified as H+ university according to Anabin database

All documents must be submitted in the original, first authenticated by the responsible institution in the country where they were issued (Ministry for Foreign Affairs) and finally authenticated by the Austrian representative authority in the country of issue ( Austrian Embassy).

Documents written in foreign languages have to be translated into German or English. These translations also have to be authenticated by the institution in the country of issue and the Austrian representative authority.

  • High-school diploma or equivalent certificate including all elected subjects and obtained grades
  • Bachelor diploma and bachelor transcript from an acknowledged technical university (H+ according to Anabin database)

FAQ

When are the deadlines to submit an application and when does the semester begin?

Study programs at Montanuniversität begin in winter and summer semester. However, it is best to begin in the winter semester. For dates and deadlines, please consult the official Montanuniversität Leoben Calendar

Foreign students should be aware that the admission and visa processes can take several months. For this reason, it is highly recommended to send your application six months in advance.

What are the requirements for admission?

Is it necessary to pass IELTS or TOEFL exam?

Depending on your educational backgound you may need to present either one of these certificates, please select your Nationality above and follow the instructions.

Should I expect to be interviewed?

An interview may take place depending on your academic background and achievements.

Should I submit my application documents per email or online?

Montanuniversität Leoben does not accept scanned documents. Interested students must send their original documents (authenticated as well) per post or submit them personally to the Admission Office.

When do I have to pay the tuition fee and which are the methods of payment?

Tuition fees can be paid via a transfer or a deposit right after the registration at Montanuniversität Leoben. The deadline is 5th of September for Winter Semester and 5th of February for Summer Semester. You can register for lectures once this is done. Note: transfer from a foreign bank can take several days.

Where can I find information about subjects available to study at the Master's level?

Montanuniversität Leoben provides curricula for MSc Petroleum Engineering and MSc Geoenergy Engineering with a comprehensive list of available subjects.

Is German language required for the Master's program?

A B2 Level is mandatory for our IMBA program, for the other ones it is just recommended.

What are the criteria taken into account for non-specialist engineers who want to do the Master’s program in Geoenergy or Petroleum Engineering?

Each case is considered individually. Criteria include your academic background, grades, and experience. In general, we will ask you to take 1 or 2 semesters of the BSc Geoenergy Engineering or the summer course offered by DPE as supplementary courses.

Where can I find information about the equivalence of courses from BSc degree of other universities and Montanuniversität?

You have to apply for equivalency, and the curricular commission will decide which courses will be acknowledged.
