Montanuniversität & PE

The first step is to let you know what you can expect from Montanuniversität and the Department Petroleum Engineering DPE. Thus, ‘Introduction to the studies at Montanuniversität’ will give you an overview of the offered courses at the university and your future professional opportunities. Furthermore, ‘Introduction to Petroleum Engineering’ will cover the petroleum upstream business and the basics of how the petroleum industry works.

Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry

As a main characteristic of Montanuniversität, it is extremely important to start with a strong foundation as a base four competent engineers. Therefore, you will be immersed in all the basic science courses that will prepare you for your chosen major later in your studies. Mathematics, physics, statistics and an introduction to mechanics will be your first challenge.

Introduction to Geology & Mineralogy

An introduction to geology will lead you to understand the basics of the origin and historic development of our fascinating ‘planet Earth’. Throughout this section you will discover major subdisciplines such as mineralogy and petrology which cover topics from formation processes of magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to the methods used for mineral analysis.

2nd Year

Mechanics, Thermodynamics & Fluid Dynamics

Keep acquiring the basic knowledge and you will start to understand the rock-fluid system behavior and interaction. This time, the applied sciences from last year have an advanced level. Electrical engineering comprising measurement techniques and electric machines is a new subject. Additionally, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and petrophysics of reservoir rocks will provide you the transition from natural sciences towards the subject of petroleum engineering.

Numerical Methods & Computer Application

You will learn how to apply standard mathematical methods and implement algorithms in a programming language in order to write software for solving simple problems arising from economy and natural sciences. For this reason, numerical methods and computer application and programming are fundamental subjects you will be taught during your second year of studies. MATLAB and JAVA are tools that you will be able to use appropriately at the end of the courses.

Economics & Business Administration

Social sciences are an important area that will be covered as a part of your education. General economic sciences and business administration are the complement that will convey you to the basics of finance, marketing, accounting and organizational studies which are necessary as basic economical knowledge in any technical professions.

3rd Year

Geophysics, Sedimentology & Petroleum Geology

Firstly, you will learn everything about the Earth. Therefore, sedimentology, geophysics and well logging will cover how sedimentary rocks are formed, its properties and how those properties are measured and interpreted. Petroleum geology will provide you with skills in combining different geoscientific information perfectly and using the given information for petroleum exploration and production.

Drilling & Completion Engineering

Oil Wells are the conduits that connect the reservoir to the surface via several thousand meters through unfriendly environment. For this reason, it’s time to embrace Well Design and Drilling and Completion Engineering. Both areas have to be carefully analyzed and optimized in order to safe and stable well and maximize it’s productive life. You will acquire knowledge of what it takes to design a well and what considerations go into its production.

Reservoir Engineering

One of the main tasks for you as a petroleum engineer is to increase the oil recovery factor of the reservoir. Hence, the characterization of the petroleum reservoir is particularly important. Topics such as flow behavior in single and multiphase reservoirs, standard reservoir techniques applied in characterization, simulation and estimation of uncertainty will be covered in the domain of reservoir engineering related subjects.

Petroleum Production Engineering

Nowadays the most challenging task for you as a petroleum engineer is to produce oil and gas under safe and economic environment. The understanding of the conditions and processes in and around the wellbore are key to your success. As a preparation you will gain knowledge in topics like designing proper well completions, performing perforation and well test jobs, analyzing the flow behavior of oil and gas from the reservoir through the well to surface and evaluating and optimizing the overall production performance of the well.
